Change, it's inevitable.
Be it pocket jingle, physical attributes or moods, change happens.
After selling a super rad print,
I was faced with a gaping hole above the threshold of the tea fortress.
In an effort to communicate as much as possible,
I decided to upgrade the tea room and add a chalk board.
Of course, not just any old rectangular board will do,
and I couldn't spend any money.
Luckily, I'm pretty creative and have lots-o-stuff.
I cut up an old masonite drawing board,
chalk board painted it and just happened to have a rubber hand
(thanks former studio mate Ben Meister)
that I painted gold and mounted.
A few chalk scribblings later and we have artful communication.

Forgiveness Please!
I know I've left you with bated breath.
"When will I get my next dose of randomness?"
you say quietly in your head.

The system may seem defunct,
but there is a quiet beauty to the nature of the random blog post.

Quality not quantity.
Information upon inspiration.

Once again found in the form of a shrunken piece of plastic.

If you've become a tea room regular, you've most likely heard reference to our fondness for shrinky dinks. In our version of the dink we use #6 plastic which is not recyclable and commonly found in to-go food containers.

In preparation for his show opening, tea monkey Ian will be giving away "dinks" (though he prefers us not to call it that) of his artworks that will be premiering
in his show Momento Mori here at the tea room.

These are two dinks that I made of his painting "The Grim Steeper" It was fun dinkin' with doom, but I needed to get back to work on my own obsessive dink project.

I've been slowly putting together a jewelry/art piece inspired from this awesome old German woodcut I found in an almanac from 1840.

This is the latest in the series of characters from the woodcut. I'm planning on reinventing the image into jewelry and making a small light box stand for all of the pieces to be displayed upon when not in use.

I really like the simplicity of the sharpie lines against the colored pencil. It's gonna be really cool when it's done!

Yesterday was so glorious,
I decided to go for a bike ride to a thrift store I'd been meaning to hit up.

I decided to stop by Penn Treaty Park on the way,
I enjoy slowly riding the loop around the park while watching all the happy
groups of people as they enjoy their natural environment.

As I pulled up to end of the park,
where the land meets the water,
I am hailed by a glorious
beacon of tea room good will!

Behold "HOT BOO", made possible with generous contributions by Penn Treaty Park, the old abandoned electric company and some daring and thoughtful graffiti artists.

this cute lil' distiller

This past November I asked momma for this cute lil' distiller for my birthday.

Designed to extract essential oils for perfumery
it actually creates more of a hydrosol.
In this experiment I took the left over chai leaves,
steeped & strained them then poured into the cucurbit.The lamp below this glass cauldron heats the slurry to create an oil vapor.The steam collects then spirals down
through the center of the refrigeration chamber.
After the vapor cools it drips down into the collection cup.Below is a comparison of how much chai that was used and what was extracted.I wouldn't advise drinking this concoction.
My intention for this experiment is to use the liquid in a potpourri warmer.
Ideally one could burn this oil and make their house smell like chai
without any of the legwork.
I have some more experimenting to do yet,
but I'll let you know if I am successful.

Tea missions will sprinkle the city with classical Oolong ideals

This past November Ian and I performed a tea mission
(the Gung-Fu tea ceremony) at 12 Gates Gallery,
a South Asian art gallery located on 3rd and Cherry Street.
Under the impression that I would be catering an art opening,
I was caught off guard by the evening's program.
The lecture was titled "Truck Decoration, Religion and Politics".
I was slightly put off at first,
being soured by the motor-head sway our culture has leaned upon.
Luckily, Jamal Elias (the world’s foremost expert on Pakistani truck art)
had a slide show.
With a few flicks of the finger and a lengthy dialog of the
culture behind the ride,
I was hooked.

I have decided that the tea room needs a tea truck and this is my inspiration.
I have visions of a highly decorated bus,
with a private roof top deck full of colorful pillows.

Just imaging driving down 4th street, you pass by Honey's and then,
what was that on the left? Why are all those people hanging out in a parked bus?

Oh Yea, that's the Random Tea Bus.
All the cool kids hang there sipping on the mate and surfin' the web.

Tea missions will sprinkle the city with classical Oolong ideals
on culture and healthy living.
Inspiration will be ladled out by the "boo" cupful
and comfort will be experienced by all.

Only problem is funding, does anyone have a spare bus to donate?

Holy day. I have been documented in spiritual readings.
Namely the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Special Report: A Frayed Connection
is an in depth article touching on the lack of local attendee's at our
neighborhood places of worship.
I was interviewed one calm afternoon by David O'Reilly,
whom graciously purchased a few ounces of our spiced assam
to try his hand at the home made chai.

My comment

"People in our generation tend to make our own paths rather than follow someone else's."

seemed to touch a nerve for an "AreaMan" whom replies:

"Yea, as long as that path is approved by thier friends and disapproved by thier parents. I grew up in Fishtown, have family members that attended the Ukie Dome for school and remember when Northern Liberties was a wasteland, and we all made fun of the kids from there when the school bus dropped them off. Now I walk around there and just think of "Life of Brian" with the line "We are all individuals! I'm not!" There is now a lot of diversity in Northern Liberties, it has every type of white person making $60,000 plus a year. They all have time for brunch, but no time for church on Sundays. Finally, as any good Catholic knows, if you oversleep and miss your parish mass, Orthodox church counts.

Unfortunately, as the daughter of an English teacher,
my first reaction is to mention that the prior statement's final sentence is waning in effort.
The frustration felt by the writer on his religious building blocks being slowly eroded by our chemical rain of spiritual forward momentum is evident in how good it must have felt to let everyone know of how in his youth he would make fun of the kids that went to school in Northern Liberties.
I know that was a run-on sentence but it just felt so "right".

What is my point, why go on about this one reaction?

I think it is that things change,
and it is more satisfying to embrace change than to
hold on to old stigmas that tell you what you should do,
and how you should feel if you don't do them.

There are too many amazing things going on in this world
to limit oneself to one belief or way of life.

Here we are, day 2.
Things are looking good.
What to share with you today?
The topics of tea and randomness provide me with innumerable opportunities to babble on.
Luckily, instead of pulling topics out of the air
I can share with you occurrences of real human interactions.
Like inverted table massage.
What?
Yea, hanging upside down and getting your soul rubbed.
In case you were unaware: we do massage at the tea room.
First I prime you with tea and comfort,
then this muscle master (Matt Beck) greets you with a confirming touch to your left shoulder.
Shortly thereafter you turn into a puddle on the floor and my dog Izzy licks you up.
So, as queen tea lady I get some perks.
Like being a massage guinea pig.
Intro to massage experience, starts now.
I first felt as if I were lying in a canoe on a calm lake,
the inversion table pivots at my hip and cradles my form in a horizontal position.
Matt holds the table at this angle,
using his aware hands to apply gentle pressure to my limbs.
Fully clothed massage provides an extra layer of sensory attention
as the thumbs natural texture grabs hold to the threads of
the fabric against my skin.
Now a warm downy towel wraps my head and slowly lifts, rolling my melon to and fro.
As the table gracefully glides to an almost vertical angle my taught legs are guided with a comforting embrace as my body fully accepts this new position.
I am upside down.
Gravity and monsieur Beck's influence eventually bring my arms to rest,
first to the right side of my head, then the left.
I equate very few things to religious experiences.
Perhaps it was the way the sun shone so precisely through the bars on the window as I arose, post leg brace removal,
into a natural ohm posture
and my delicious cup of Ti Kwan Yin is handed to me.
I breath.

Hello World!

It is now January 1st 2010.
You've made it.
Congratulations.
Now, I'm not one to preach,
but I do believe it is time for you to do something different.
Nothing in specific, but maybe just, ah I don't know....everything.
What am I doing differently, you ask?
Well, I've decided to start blogging.
I will blog (hopefully) at least once a day.
In doing so I plan to share my special little life of tea and randomness with you,
my dear darling world.

Now, why in the world would you want to make a habit of checking in on
the unexceptional blog of Rebecca Goldschmidt,
owner of The Random Tea Room & Curiosity Shop?
Mayhaps it be to find out what varietal of tea I happen to sip upon.
Or a quick visit to see what kind of "high jinks"
the tea monkeys have gotten themselves into.
Or maybe you are a web savvy tea room regular that wants to see if your pearls of conversational banter had an affect on my diatribe of the day.
Take it how you will (preferably sans cream and sugar),
the truth of the matter is:
I'm blogging for me.
I need a reason to finish all the little projects I have up in the air,
or have simply talked passionately about.
World, you are my reason and you will help me to better myself.
When I wake up early in the morning by accident,
thinking of my commitment to you will make me get out of bed early.
No more lounging about waiting for my alarm to go off and then pressing snooze at least twice.
I will walk downstairs and turn on the kettle,
listen to music, stop putting life off and simply put: do more.
I know, this all sounds like quite a commitment.
Especially if you've read up to this point.
But I think I'm ready now. It is time.

Black Teas of Sri Lanka & Assam

These are fully oxidized teas, among the most highly-caffeinated and full-bodied within the tea spectrum. Black teas from Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon) and the north Indian state of Assam are particularly well suited to the addition of milk and/or sugar. However, owing to the quality of our rotating selection of these single-estate teas, it is worth first tasting them on their own.

House Ceylon - This brisk, full-bodied classic hails from the mountains of Sri Lanka – formerly Ceylon, hence the name of all tea grown there. Our House Ceylon is on a rotating basis, meaning that we frequently offer different teas from different tea estates and regions, seeking quality and diversity of flavor – but it will always have that characteristic “brisk” flavor for which Ceylon teas have come to be prized. Ask your tea tender about the source of our current selection. This brew can be enjoyed with or without the addition of milk or sugar.

Tippy Reserve Assam - The full-bodied, malty quality of Assam is often the backbone of popular European blends such as English Breakfast. Darjeeling

Known across the Tea World as "The Champagne of Tea," the town of Darjeeling lies in the Himalayan foothills of the northern Indian state of West Bengal and is the namesake of all the tea grown in the area. Teas from the Darjeeling district are unique in flavor and processing because they are derived from Chinese tea plant varietals (and later, hybrids) that were first planted there at the behest of the British in the mid-19th century. We keep both of our selections on a rotating basis to ensure freshness and quality, so be sure to ask about the estate origin of either tea.

Namring Summer Flush Darjeeling – Our House Darjeeling from the Namring Estate displays a full-bodied yet mild flavor while retaining the classic crisp flavor associated with Darjeeling, offering notes of citrus, spice and earth. Perfect in the morning or afternoon, this tea can stand up to milk or sugar, but we recommend first trying it on its own to fully appreciate its quality and complexity.

House Spring Flush Darjeeling – First (or Spring) Flush Darjeelings are some of the most elegant and exciting teas in the world -- there simply is nothing else like them. The diversity of flavor found in First Flush Darjeelings is most impressive, but they are routinely revered for their floral, vegetal and muscatel grape flavor profiles. This bouquet of flavors holds true to its origins of a pristine Himalayan tea garden, yet also evokes memories of the forest on a glittering spring day. Chinese Reds

Black tea grown in China is called Red Tea (not to be confused with the caffeine-free herbal tisane Rooibos from South Africa, also known as “Red Bush Tea”). The best known of the Chinese Reds, Keemun, is appropriately referred to as “The Burgundy of Teas.” Red Teas are often described as having a “winy” flavor and/or body, and they also yield a discernibly redder liquor (liquid) than their Indian relatives. Red teas from Anhui, Yunnan, Hunan and Fujian provinces often exhibit notes of chocolate, wood and earth and consequently pair very well with spicy food and chocolate. A high quality Red tea is renowned for its rich, subtly sweet flavor and exceptionally smooth finish.

Organic South Cloud – A smooth, slightly smoky, full-bodied tea made from the broad-leafed tea varietal "dayeh" from Yunnan province. Many of the leaves are gold-tipped, which results in a more complex flavor and a deep amber liquor. Exceedingly drinkable, this tea can stand up to milk and/or sugar, but we recommend first trying it alone.

Keemun Mao Feng – From Anhui province, the Keemun Mao Feng is milder yet more complex than most Keemuns, with an elegantly bold and wiry leaf style. This awakening brew reminds us of barley on the nose, next offering a touch of spice, perhaps nutmeg, followed by a gently smoky finish. Satisfying and smooth, this tea is best savored on its own.

Golden Monkey King - This delectable brew comes from Fujian province, a region also revered for its Green, White & Oolong teas. Surprisingly sweet, mellow, complex and smooth, with a tantalizing chocolate aroma.

White Monkey King – Our House Chinese Green is as crisp as a snow pea. The dry leaf is green and white, exhibiting its high tip content, while the liquor comes out to a hue of canary yellow. Try it in the traditional Chinese Gaiwan for the full experience!

Organic Lung Ching - Or "Dragonwell" is one of the most popular and famous of all the styles of Chinese Green Tea. The dry leaves appear to be little flat blades of grass and the flavor is reminiscent of chestnuts. An excellent grade of this tea for the price, please enjoy Lung Ching in its tradtional brewing method in a Chinese Gaiwan.

Pi Lo Chun - An incredible find from the venerated Fujian province, Pi Lo Chun translates into "Green Snail Spring" and is one of the highest forms of Chinese Green Tea. To smell the dried leaf of this tea is to inhale the first yawns of spring. Soft, delicate and slightly sweet with a characteristic note of yellow plum -- this is a perfect tea to restore the spirit during late morning or afternoon. For maximum enjoyment, please experience this tea in its traditional brewing method in a Chinese Gaiwan. Like a fine wine, Pi Lo Chun should always be savored on its own.

Chinese Whites

Once only reserved for the Emperor, White Teas are only steamed and dried, never withered, rolled or oxidized, offering not only the healthiest brew, but also the lowest amount of caffeine. Depending on the tea, White Tea is either primarily or entirely composed of tea buds as opposed to leaves. The minimal processing gives us a chance to view the closest approximation of the tea in its raw state. Due to their extremely delicate character, White Teas should only be savored on their own so that the finest and faintest of their flavors can be fully enjoyed. Their whispering nature is considered the perfect tone of subtlety for meditation. Sipping on a pot of White Tea is an activity to calm the spirit and clear the mind.

Drum Mountain White Cloud – Tenderly plucked, large silvery buds from the famous mountain where the monks of the Buddhist Drum Mountain monastery grew their tea for centuries. Drum Mountain is our House White, exemplifying the slightly sweet nature of White Tea, but adding a nuanced vegetal tone often associated with only the most refined Chinese Greens. Drum Mountain can be enjoyed morning, noon or night, but is always best relished on its own.

Fuding White Treasure –

This haiku is as close as we can come to describing the experience of Fuding White Treasure. This tea is unique among Chinese Whites. Hailing from Fujian province, renowned for many of its Green and Red Teas, Fuding is a recent favorite among White Teas in the tea world and as such, supply each year is limited.

Bodhidharma’s Eyelids – A very special house blend of Organic Pai Mu Tan (White Peony White Tea) and Cha Hua (Tea Flowers). Our Cha Hua hail from Jing Mai Mountain in Southern Yunnan, where the tea trees range from 800 – 1,200 years old. Every fall the tea trees blossom just before producing seeds and going into winter hibernation. Cha Hua have a floral and fruity flavor, recalling apricot or honeydew on the nose, with a subtle sweet flavor hinting of fig. Delicious and soothing with only trace amounts of caffeine. The addition of Pai Mu Tan to these tea flowers adds body, balance and a nutty character. Enjoy this harmonious pairing in a gaiwan any time of day or night.

Oolong

Oolong (pronounced wu-long) is a Chinese or Taiwanese semi-oxidized tea, spanning perhaps the most diverse spectrum of flavor and body between Green and Red/Black Teas. Oolong is regarded as the ultimate art form in tea-making in Taiwan, which has adopted and perfected the brewing method for it, known as Gong Fu. The Gong Fu style of serving tea originated in China, but at some point reached epically proportioned importance in Taiwan (formerly Formosa, thus the name of many Oolongs grown in Taiwan). In the Gong Fu style, very small tea pots made of an especially dense clay called Yixing (pronounced ee-shing) are used because the residue or tea oils from the tea more easily accumulate in the pot, seasoning it with the flavor of the one kind of tea reserved for that particular pot. After decades of use, simply adding hot water to the pot alone can yield its own tea from the years of tea oil accumulation. The combination of short brewing times, lots of leaf and the small capacity of the Yixing pots produce multiple steepings of what is considered the very essence of one of the highest forms of tea. Baozhong – This light, floral, fruity and softly sweet green Oolong is affectionately referred to as “The Princess of Teas.” The leaf style of this winter harvest Taiwanese specialty is twisted as opposed to rolled like many other Oolongs, yielding a depth of flavor upon the first steeping that often takes rolled Oolongs several steepings to achieve. An elegant, delicate brew that is to be savored like a fine wine – on its own.

Deluxe Ti Kwan Yin – Named after an incarnation of the Buddhist deity Kwan Yin, or “The Iron Goddess of Mercy,” Ti Kwan Yin is a family of its own within the Oolong style. Ranging from straw-colored infusions of delicate quality to robustly roasted and nutty brews, Ti Kwan Yin always somehow retains a unique flavor found in no other kind of tea.

King’s Tea – Our darkest, nuttiest Oolong, the King’s Tea is infused with ginseng, lending its already rich character a sweet finish. House Sencha - Sencha is a large family of steamed Japanese Green Teas spanning every grade from coarse to sublime. Our House Sencha is a pleasant everyday tea that is vegetal and slightly sweet. This Sencha also makes a great iced tea during the warmer months and pairs marvelously with lemongrass, ginger and all citrus.

Gyokuro Asahina – From the Uji prefecture, Gyokuro means “Precious Dew Pearl” and is the highest grade of Japanese green leaf tea within the 3-tiered grading system. Special straw mats are spread over the tops of the tea plants toward the end of their growth to provide shade, which imparts the subtly sweet flavor for which Gyokuro has come to be revered. An especially verdant tea with a soft, delicate flavor, this tea is perfectly suited for an afternoon of reflection.

Genmaicha – Roasted brown rice and whole leaf Japanese Green Tea are happily married for this classic blend. The toasty, nutty flavor soothes the spirit in colder months and also makes for a gentle iced beverage.

Kaiseiki Hojicha – Twigs from the first flush and leaves from latter flushes are lightly roasted to bring you this slightly sweet, rich brew with flavors of chestnut and freshly baked bread. Hojicha is an excellent choice to accompany food.

Shouhaku Matcha – Matcha is a powdered green tea of the highest caliber used in the Japanese Tea Ceremony, Chanoyu. It is the unquestionable pinnacle of Japanese tea-making. The color of Matcha is a deep emerald, and its flavor is intensely vegetal (think wheatgrass) and quite viscous, offering an unrivalled taste sensation. Our Shouhaku Matcha (meaning “Pines and Oak Trees”) is a “thin tea,” (surprisingly, they get even thicker) and is one of the favored teas of renowned Urasanke tea sensei Hounsai Daisosho. Matcha is vigorously whisked with a bamboo tool called a “chasen” in a special Matcha bowl called a “chawan,” and as such, the portion is small and cannot be made to go.

Pu-Erh

Pu-Erh is one of the oldest varieties of tea, originating in the Yunnan province of China, the very birthplace of tea, where the first tea plants were discovered in the wild and later cultivated. The truly unique, earthy, mineral-laden flavor of Pu-Erh belies its definitive smoothness. Pu-Erh is one of the only teas to undergo an aging process, sometimes even in Himalayan caves. During the aging process, a culture is introduced to the tea and over time enzymes develop in the tea, which are purported to be the cause of its digestive properties. When consumed with or after a meal, it has remarkable powers for breaking up oil and fat in the digestive track, not to mention soothing the sting of spice. Due to the minimal tannic content in Pu-Erh, it rarely becomes bitter when steeped for long periods like other tea and is intended to be steeped multiple times. Today, Pu-Erh is a staple in the diets of many people in Yunnan, Tibet and Nepal.

Tuocha – A cooked Pu-Erh that is shaped into small nest-like cakes and wrapped in paper, Tuocha is one of the most popular forms of Pu-Erh – cooked or raw. Earthy and smooth. Come in for a pot after your next big meal.

Golden Pu-Erh - A darker and fuller-flavored brew than the Tuocha, Golden Pu-Erh is a cooked loose leaf Pu-Erh exhibiting an earthiness reminiscent of clay. Surprisingly smooth, this tea stands up to several steepings.

Jing Mai Bing Cha, 2003 – This greener, semi-cooked Pu-Erh comes from Jing Mai Mountain in southern Yunnan, where tea is wild-crafted from several-hundred-year-old tea trees. The mature leaves are sun-withered, hand-kneaded, wood-fired, wok-roasted, steamed and then shaped into round cakes by putting the leaves into cloth bags and placing the bags under a stone mold upon which the tea-makers stand, applying their weight in a rotational motion to achieve the desired circular shape of the tea cake. The flavor is bittersweet and brings to mind breathing in the air close to a river nestled in a forest. This tea is intended for several steepings, with the “heart” of the tea’s character usually apparent somewhere around the 3rd or 4th steeping.

Yerba Mate

A highly stimulating infusion widely consumed in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Brazil, Yerba Mate is traditionally drank from a cuia (cured gourd) through a bombilla (filtered straw) made of metal or wood. Due to its lack of tannic content, the leaf is left in the gourd so as to allow multiple steepings and can also be brewed with cold water. The earthy, herbal flavor steadily mellows with each subsequent steeping, though the invigorating effects are only heightened with the passing of each round. Traditionally, a gourd full of Mate is passed around a group of people many times and the straw is never used to stir the leaf inside the gourd. Popular amongst hikers in the Andes, Yerba Mate is known to increase physical endurance, curb the appetite, sharpen the mind, and assist the gallbladder in processing toxins from the body. Vulgarity is a catalyst. A group of young artists answer the siren call of the concept, reacting and responding to the idea and execution of vulgarity in contemporary media.

This collaboration, LIVRÉ AUX CHIENS! (“Thrown to the Dogs”) presents a visual commentary on the idea(s) of vulgarity, saturation of media, and shock value by contemporary entertainment forms such as television advertisements and favored art forms. The purpose of this multi-medium exhibition is to bring attention to an array of contemporary media issues and spark discussion among its viewers.

The artists contributing their work are college-aged individuals eagerly making their way into the Philadelphia art scene. These fresh and enthusiastic artists aim to bring light unto important and very accessible portions of our media-saturated world. The artists include recent college graduates and current students: Jonathan Weary, David Barnhart, Eric Preisendanz, Sean Favre, Alexis Kaczka, Kathryn Gronsbell, Sophia Mariano, and Kylie Thompson. Contributing written work is Philly zine writer Katie Haegele. The show is being curated by Brittany Schrum.

Using a traditional Canon point-and-shoot film camera (not digital), John's photographs serve as ethereal narratives, telling their life stories from his unique perspective.

The Photography of Gavin DiRusso
Thursday December 10th from 6-9pmGavin DiRusso earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering at Drexel University. Soon thereafter, he assisted in spearheading the Green Roof Division of the locally-based, environmentally-friendly architecture and design firm, Onion Flats .

All the while, his hobbyist photographer urges were rear mulling, and he found himself taking and stockpiling numerous photographs over the years. Specifically, photos of Philadelphia's iconic architecture, the city's random urban decay and the various BMX bike crews in Love Park. At the insistence of his peers, he found himself putting together a series of his finest photos.
